Sandilyan was the pen name of Bhashyam Iyengar, who was born in 1910 in Tirukovilur and died in 1987.

He is famous for historical romance and adventure novels set in the times of the Chola and Pandya empires.

His best-known books are Kadal Pura, Yavana Rani, and Mannan Magal.

What Is the Story of Kadal Pura?

The story begins in the Chola kingdom, in the time of King Veerarajendra Chola.

Gunavarman is the younger brother of Jayavarman, the king of the Srivijaya kingdom.

Jayavarman rules his kingdom with tyranny, so Gunavarman asks the Cholas for help.

Gunavarman moves to Palur Perundurai in Kalinga along with his daughter, Kanchana Devi.

The king of Kalinga is a friend of Jayavarman, so Jayavarman plans to kill Gunavarman with the help of the Kalinga king.

When this news reaches King Veerarajendra, he sends his commander Karunakara Pallava to Kalinga to rescue Gunavarman and Kanchana Devi.

Veerarajendra also gives Karunakara a peace note to deliver to Bhima, the king of South Kalinga.

Bhima does not honour the peace note and puts Karunakara in jail.

Bhima also plans to take control of the seas from the Cholas.

Karunakara escapes from Kalinga after many adventures.

Kulothunga I, who is called Anabaayan and is the son of Veerarajendra, helps him.

Anabaayan’s companion Amir, an Arab, and Amir’s teacher Aguda, a Chinese, also stand with him.

With Aguda’s help, Karunakara learns the techniques of sea battle.

He turns a ship he received as a gift from Aguda into a warship and names it Kadal Pura, the Sea Pigeon.

With this ship, he saves Chola merchants from pirates again and again.

On Mohini Island, Karunakara meets Manjalazhagi, and she falls in love with him.

He cannot accept her love because of his duty and because he still remembers Kanchana Devi, but he cannot forget Manjalazhagi either.

Later he saves Kanchana Devi from pirates by chance.

He captures the Srivijaya empire and places Gunavarman on its throne.

At the request of Jayavarman, who lost the battle, Veerarajendra arranges the marriage of Manjalazhagi and Karunakara Pallava.

Is Kadal Pura Based on a True Story?

Kadal Pura is historical fiction, so it mixes real history with imagined people and events.

The real history behind it is the Kalinga victory of Karunakara Thondaiman, which the poet Jayankondar describes in Kalingattuparani.

Kulothunga I, called Anabaayan in the inscriptions, ruled from 1070 to 1122.

Karunakara Thondaiman conquered Kalinga, which was then ruled by Ananthavarman Chodaganga.

Some parts of the novel are not historically accurate, and the landscapes in the story are entirely imaginary.

For example, Aguda is shown as a 25-year-old in the novel, but the real Aguda was born in 1068.

Readers should enjoy Kadal Pura as a great adventure story, not as a history book.

Why Do Readers Like Kadal Pura?

Readers like Kadal Pura because it is a sea adventure, and very few Tamil novels are set on the sea.

The building of the warship Kadal Pura and the sea battles with pirates are the most exciting parts of the book.

The novel also has a touching love story between Karunakara and Manjalazhagi.

Readers on Goodreads rate the book above 4 out of 5, which shows how much it is still loved.

Dr L. Kailasam liked the characters so much that he continued their story in his own novel, Rajali, showing them in their old age.
