📝 Story Summary – சிக்கவீர ராஜேந்திரன் (Chikkaveera Rajendran Masti Venkatesha Iyengar Tamil Novel)

Chikaveera Rajendra is a powerful and tragic tale of the last Raja of Kodagu (Coorg).

Chikkaveera Rajendra, the last king of Kodagu, is shown as a man consumed by paranoia and pride, unwilling to heed the advice of his ministers, advisors, or even family.

His stubbornness ultimately leads to disaster, paving the way for British annexation. Strikingly, the people of Kodagu — though no fans of British rule — accepted this change, so broken were they by the king’s tyranny. The novel’s ending is haunting.

Chikkaveera Rajendran was a king of Kodagu. During the reign of the king, he was not so successful because he was a straight-up person who refused to bend — and his sons were not good. This book tells the story of that king and the tragic fall of his dynasty.

The novel covers one of the most painful chapters in South Indian history — the British annexation of Kodagu in 1834. Masti Venkatesha Iyengar portrays Chikka Virarajendra not as a simple villain but as a deeply complex and tragic figure — a king who had the pride and stubbornness of a true warrior but lacked the wisdom and humility needed to save his kingdom. His story is a mirror of how personal flaws can bring down not just a man but an entire civilization.

The novel covers historical events of Kodagu in extraordinary detail — names of people of that time, life events around them, their lifestyles, how Chikka Veera Rajendra ruled, his downfall, and how the British politely approached to encroach Coorg under their rule.

🏆 Awards & Recognition

Masti Venkatesha Iyengar won the Jnanpith Award in 1983 — India’s highest literary honor — for the novel Chikkaveera Rajendra. The story was about the last Kodava king.

The Kodava community was displeased with the negative portrayal of their last king — yet the literary world recognized the novel as one of the greatest works of Indian historical fiction ever written.

Masti was also conferred the honorable title of Rajasevasakta by the then Maharaja of Mysore, Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadeyar, one of many honors that reflected his extraordinary contribution to Kannada literature.

Review 1: “I started reading this book as Masti Venkatesha Iyengar won the Jnanpith Award for this. As the story progressed, it became very interesting. I wonder how Masti was able to collect all these historical events of Kodagu — such an amazing effort. How Chikka Veera Rajendra ruled, his downfall, and how the British politely approached to encroach Coorg under their rule. Interesting book.

Review 2: “Chhote Raja is a novel as powerful as it is beautifully written. It fully justifies its Jnanpith Award, offering a searing portrayal of a ruler unraveling. The novel’s ending is haunting and left me deeply moved.

Review 3: “Chikkaveera Rajendran is one of the most powerful Tamil translations of a Kannada masterpiece. Masti’s ability to portray a king’s tragic fall through such vivid and historically accurate detail is extraordinary. This is not just a story about one king — it is a story about how pride destroys even the most powerful among us. A must-read for every Tamil reader.

Review 4: “Reading this Novel in Tamil feels like stepping back in time to Kodagu of the 19th century. The characters feel completely real, and the historical events are described with such richness and authenticity.
